The Klein Drakensberg basaltic chain, stretching 300km from north to south, comprises an imposing plateau, the Highveld, rising between 1,200m and 1 600m in altitude. The massif, sculpted by erosion, boasts a variety of landscapes: passes, vertiginous waterfalls, pine and eucalyptus forests as far as the eye can see, and the spectacular Blyde River gorge. To the east, near Kruger Park, the Highveld falls off abruptly into the bush savannah of the Lowveld.
