Useful information

Description

Founded in 1880, the university has grown from 53 students in one wooden building on donated land to its current 150-acre main campus-University Park-with more than 28,000 students and 2,000 full-time faculty members. Landscaped plazas, courtyards and walkways are punctuated by more than 100 major buildings, with contemporary structures abutting stately Romanesque Revival constructions. The white clapboard Widney Alumni House, the oldest building on campus, dates from 1880. Romanesque-style Mudd Hall (1930), home of the Department of Philosophy, features an attractive cloister and a churchlike library. The Fisher Gallery, the university's main art gallery, includes a permanent collection of European works dating from the 15C, in addition to American art (open Aug-May Tue-Sat noon-5pm; closed university holidays; 213-740-5537). USC's School of Cinema-Television was one of the first of its kind when it was established in 1929. Tours (1hr) of the state-of-the-art Cinema-Television Center Complex (3450 Watt Way) offer an in-depth look at the art of filmmaking from an educational perspective (year-round Fri 2:30pm; 213-740-2892).
