Description

Recognizing the growing city's need for suburban shopping accessible by automobile, department-store owner John G. Bullock and his partner, P.G. Winnett, decided to build a branch of the downtown retail store on a barren stretch of Wilshire west of Lafayette Park. The store (1929, Parkinson & Parkinson) was not only one of the first ever conceived for the driving shopper, but also a masterpiece of Art Deco design. From the street, a 241ft tower calls attention to the terra-cotta-clad building, detailed in copper zigzag and snowflake patterns. The building itself takes up only one-third of the total property; the main entrance is at the rear, facing a parking lot that covers the remainder of the block. Today Southwestern Law School occupies the building.
