Useful information

Description

In the reign of Elizabeth I, when theatrical performances were frowned upon by the protestants, Shoreditch welcomed many people of the theatre. The first theatre in England, The Theatre, was founded here in 1576 by James Burbage. His sons, Cuthbert and Richard, continued his work. All three lie in the churchyard of St Leonard's Church. The area is becoming gentrified, gradually turning this hipster heaven into a landscape of organic shops and upmarket labels.
