Prešeren Square
The Green Guide

Useful information

Description

Irregular in shape, facing the Triple Bridge that spans the Ljubljanica, this lovely square is dedicated to Slovenia's greatest Romantic poet, France Prešeren (1800-49). His poem, Zdravljica ("A toast" in English) provided Slovenia with the words of its national anthem. The statue of the poet, erected in 1905, is surrounded by numerous Art Nouveau façades, as well as the spectacular Baroque Franciscan Church of the Annunciation, built in 1646-60, whose 18C altar is by the sculptor Francesco Robba.
