Useful information

Description

The square, with a statue of the poet in the centre, was one of the sites of the Carnation Revolution on 25 April 1974. After taking the barracks where Council President Marcelo Caetano was at the time, the people accompanied the soldiers on their way up the Chiado and paused here to celebrate their regained freedom. This square also marks the boundary between the Chiado and the Bairro Alto. To the south, at the end of Rua do Alecrim, is a magnificent view of the "Straw Sea", the River Tagus.
