Useful information

Description

The style of the first cathedral (1072-1092) was Norman throughout. It was re-roofed in 1141 following a fire. In 1185, Hugh of Avallon, a French monk, built the present Early English cathedral following an earthquake which virtually destroyed the original Norman buildings. Few cathedrals have achieved the impressive proportions of the grandiose Lincoln Cathedral which is visible for miles around.
