The Michelin Guide's review
In May and June, the Garden of Moss is truly bewitching. Designed in 1339 by Zen monk Muso Soseki (1275-1351) on the spot of a monastery dedicated to Amida Buddha, the temple of moss has two levels: the lower garden of Heian influence laid out around a water feature and the upper garden, built on a hillside, which is strewn with large rocks that bring to mind the bed of a waterfall, thus giving an idea of what awaits. Soseki also designed the first Zen garden.
