The Green Guide

Useful information

Description

During the Edo period, playhouses, markets, lotteries and sumo matches entertained the pilgrims come to worship at the temple at Kotohira. Built in 1835, Kanamuru-za is the oldest remaining kabuki playhouse in Japan. Visitors can go backstage and admire the ingenious revolving wooden stage from the wings. Performances are occasionally staged in season (April-mid May).
