On a rocky outcrop overlooking the sea, the ruins offer a magnificent panorama over the Aegean and the barren eastern side of the island. The Sanctuary of the Cabeiri (gods who protected the countryside and sailors) dating from the Hellenistic era, is said to have been founded by Seleucus, a lieutenant of Alexander the Great, to out shadow the famous Kavirio of the Island of Samothrace, 50km north of Limnos.
