It took a little more than ten years (1863-73) to complete construction of the palace of the last khan of Kokand, who called on the country's best craftsmen to provide the ceramic and glazed brick decorations. The palace originally had 114 rooms, in a reference to the number of suras in the Koran. The 19 rooms that survived the Russian invasion present visitors with exceedingly fine mural paintings and original decorations that have retained all their splendour. Various museums are housed on the premises.
