Being tricky to reach, the little island of Samothrace is not visited by many tourists. It does have some interesting ancient vestiges, though, including the Sanctuary of the Great Gods dedicated to the mysterious Cabeiri (venerated by the Ancients, who held initiation ceremonies here). It was here, in 1863, that the famous Hellenistic masterpiece, the winged Victory (3C BC), was excavated (now in the Louvre in Paris).
