Description
A superb panoramic road leads to this monastery, considered one of the most important monuments of the 11C Byzantine era and a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was founded by the Byzantine emperor Monomachos on the spot where a miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary had been found. The octagonal church is decorated with magnificent mosaics. The underground water cistern, refectory and house for guests are also worthy of your attention.
