Description
Zeniarai-Benzaiten Shrine has both charm and atmosphere. After passing through a tunnel and torii, you emerge into an enormous space that is hewn out of the rock. At the back of a cave is a freshwater spring that the snake goddess Ugajin is said to have revealed to Yoritomo. Ever since, people have hastened here to pray at one of the numerous little altars dedicated to Ugajin, who is also the goddess of wealth. In a bid to increase their personal fortunes, people even come to wash their money in the waters, carefully drying the coins and notes afterwards amid the burning incense.
