Useful information

Description

A flight of uneven, mossy steps leads to Sugimoto-dera, the oldest temple in Kamakura (founded in 734). The white banners displaying the names of donors stand out against the abundant green foliage. The temple, attributed to the priest Gyoki, is home to three statues of the 11-headed Kannon goddess, two of which date from the Kamakura period. The temple was rebuilt in the 17C.
