The Metropolitan's Palace, a white stone edifice built in the 17C and former home of the metropolite, houses the department of ancient Russian art of the Fine Arts Museum. It affords a fine lesson on the Yaroslavl School characterised by its production of large icons in which the narrative dimension is central. Note in particular the (13C) Saviour Pantocrator and the Virgin of Tolga (1314).
