Description
In the 16C and 17C, this church, Agia Ekaterini, housed a study centre for the arts, literature and sciences, which begot the Cretan School of painting. It houses St Catherine of Sinai Museum of Christian Art, which presents an overview of Cretan art from the 15C to 19C: paintings, manuscripts and carved wood, clothing and, of course, icons, six of which are attributed to Michalis Damaskinos (16C), a Cretan painter, who also left his mark on the Ionian islands and Venice.
