Located close to the Ring Road (Route 1), on the course of the Skjálfandafljót River, at around 50km south of Húsavík, this waterfall draws the crowds. Divided into several branches that flow into a cirque of basaltic rock formations, Goðafoss is impressive in its strength and beauty. The "Waterfall of the Gods" was so named around the year 1000, after the Icelandics had converted to Christianity and the pagan idols (such as Óðin and Þórr) thrown into the waterfalls.
