Description

At Gates of the Mountains, the Missouri River weaves through a spectacular canyon formed from Precambrian sedimentary rock and Mississippian limestone. An optical illusion makes the towering rock walls appear to act as waterway guardians-thus Meriwether Lewis dubbed them "gates." Narrated 13mi cruises from Upper Holter Lake interpret the natural and human history of the area.
