Completely hollowed out of the tufa rock, the Eski Gumus monastery is one of the most beautiful in Cappadocia. This huge, well-preserved sanctuary adjoins a small underground village and is home to a church adorned with magnificent frescoes. Painted in the 10C and 11C (and restored in 1962), the frescoes comprise huge, striking images of the Christ Pantocrator, Madonna and Child and the Three Kings, among others.
