Useful information

Description

A 300m-high cinder cone, which became active in 1064, is surrounded by hundreds of acres of black lava flows and ash, out of which an improbable pine forest sprouts. A 1.5km trail skirts the base of the volcano. You cannot climb Sunset Crater itself, but trails access smaller, nearby volcanoes, including Lenox Crater (1.5km round trip).
