Description
The visit is an absorbing foray into the fascinating atmosphere of the Mystery Play of Elche. Audio-visual resources (in English) give the visitor insights into the festa: the medieval origins of the legend of the consueta (a manuscript of the representation of the Mystery Play, found on a beach in 1370 alongside a statue of the Virgin Mary); the unfolding of this religious lyrical drama, act by act; explanations of the staging (notably the stage structure in the 18C enabling the Assumption of the Virgin to be depicted within the basilica's cupola).
