Useful information

Description

The Cistercian abbey was founded in 1200 by the Norman William de Clare as an act of thanksgiving after he escaped harm from a violent storm when returning to England. Monks lived here until the 16C, then the abbey became the property of the Colclough family for almost 400 years. The site is highly photogenic from the viewpoint of the fortified bridge and has retained some lovely ruins and a massive crenellated tower.
