This region, which is also known as Elbsandsteingebirge ("sandstone mountains of the Elbe"), is one of Germany's most spectacular natural wonders with its sheer cliffs, deep gorges and unique needle-like sandstone peaks. Since 1990, the Saxon Switzerland region has been designated a national park, to the great pleasure of climbers and hikers who are able to enjoy unbeatable views from the Bastei belvedere or the ramparts of the Königstein fortress.
