Visitors enter the camp through the prisoners' gate decorated with the words Arbeit macht frei ("Work sets you free"). Two groups of huts have been rebuilt so that visitors can better visualise daily life here in this camp, which held 30 000 prisoners in 1944. On the Appellplatz (Roll Call Square), a monument has been built by the international community, in addition to a Roman Catholic chapel, a Protestant church and a Jewish memorial. Nearby are the crematory ovens, around which a necropolis was laid out.
