Useful information

Description

Built in the 11C and 12C, Canterbury cathedral was partly destroyed by a fire in 1174, after which only the nave and crypt survived. Following the assassination of archbishop Thomas Becket in 1170, the church became the most important place of pilgrimage in Northern Europe. It was then rebuilt in honour of the martyr in Early English Gothic style. The nave and cloister were rebuilt in the 14C while the 15C saw the completion of the transept and the replacement of the towers.
