Ventanillas of Otuzco

Useful information

Description

Nestled on the side of a hill overlooking the verdant valley of the Río Chonta, this pre-Incan rock necropolis (600-1200 AD) has hundreds of tomb niches. They were hewn out of the rockface on several levels, hence the name ventanillas ("small windows"). In the pre-Columbian era, the niche openings were sealed off by gold or silver doors, which were looted by the Spanish on their arrival.
