Maki-Odo
The Green Guide

Useful information

Description

The Maki-Odo was once the largest temple of the Tendai school of Buddhism before it burned down 700 years ago. The building that stands in its place today is less ostentatious, but the annex, Shuzo-ko, houses a national treasure, three monumental statues from the Heian period (794-1185): an impressive bronze statue depicting the god of war, Daiitoku Myo-o, astride a buffalo; a wooden statue of a seated Amida Nyorai and a statue of Fudo-Myo-o crowned by a phoenix and holding a sword in his right hand.
