According to legend, these highlands owe their name to a shepherdess who was saved from a storm by the devil, who turned her cows into stone... unless the expression means "1 000 springs" in local dialect or "deserted mountain". Among the treasures of the Millevaches Regional Nature Park, don't miss the 8 000-year-old Tourbière de Longeyroux (peat bog) and Mt Bessou (977m), dubbed the "Roof of Limousin". The moors and the lake, Étang des Oussines (18ha), are home to remarkable wildlife, including otters: the park's emblem.
