Built from 1498 by the wealthy Craioveşti family, Bistrita Monastery was altered in 1846 after an earthquake in 1838. Gheorghe Tattarescu decorated the neo-Gothic church in 1855. Close by, the small chapel outside the walls boasts original 1620 frescoes. A modest religious printing museum bears witness to the monastery's former importance in this field.
