Useful information

Description

The historic quarter of Carmel, south of the Rivière aux Herbes, boasts some remarkable buildings: the Conseil Départemental and courthouse on Place du Champ-d'Arbaud were built by architect Ali Tur, commissioned to express colonial power in the early 20C. Further south, the Église Notre-Dame-du-Mont-Carmel (late 17C) precedes Fort Louis-Delgrès, named after an anti-slavery campaigner. It must be said that the success story of Basse-Terre's sugar industry was on the back of slave labour.
