The "Old Kentucky Home" immortalized in a ballad by composer Stephen Foster (1826-64) is actually Federal Hill, a Federal-style brick home built in 1818 by Foster's cousin, Judge John Rowan. It was on a visit to his cousin's house in 1852 that Foster, already a well-known songwriter, composed the tune that is now Kentucky's state song. In 1923 the home was officially renamed "My Old Kentucky Home" when it was bequeathed to the state by Rowan heirs. Guides in period dress conduct lively, anecdotal tours, emphasizing the many original antiques within the mansion.
