This peaceful meadow contained one of the most horrific Civil War prison camps. Today the 26.5-acre prison site is bare except for replicas of portions of the stockade that once enclosed the grounds, and memorials erected by Union survivors. Exhibits at the National Prisoner of War Museum tell the story of American POWs throughout the nation's history. Adjacent to the prison is Andersonville National Cemetery, the burial site for 13,000 Union soldiers and other US war veterans.
