Description

Napoleon III wanted to erect a mausoleum for the imperial family, and so, in 1857, he commissioned this chapel whose large dome was painted in trompe-l'oeil by Maglioli. Built in St-Florent stone in the neo-Renaissance style, the chapel houses a fine Coptic Christ which Napoleon brought from Egypt for his mother. In the circular crypt lie several members of his family, among them Charles-Marie, his wife Letizia, and Letizia's half-brother, Cardinal Fesch.
