Traditionally associated with health and wealth, salt gave its name to the Salzkammergut and, until modern times, brought the region exceptional economic vitality. Some 76 lakes laid out at the foot of the imposing massifs of the Dachstein and Totes Gebirge add to the appeal of this long-renowned region.
