The western slope of Mount Hage-dake culminating at 380m is covered in an impressive oak-beech forest. The humid subtropical climate, with frequent rains though the year, promotes the dense growth of araceae and tree ferns at the foot of sumptuous oaks with curtains of aerial roots hanging down. Specific animal species in Tokunoshima are Amami rabbit, Ryuku Long-haired rat, Ryukyu Spiny rat and Okinawan groundgekko.
