Bordered to the east by Venezuela, the Guajira Peninsula has two capitals: the official capital of Riohacha and the Amerindian one of Uribia. Its dry plains are inhabited by the Wayuu, a fiercely independent tribe with deep-seated traditions and values, who have to contend with a harsh environment. The sparsely populated peninsula is characterised by its spectacularly coloured deserts and its pristine beaches running along the Caribbean coast.
