Antiphonitis Church
The Green Guide

Useful information

Description

Hidden in a verdant fold of the Pentadaktylos Mountains, this church is a real treasure trove. Within its wall are two cycles of paintings. One, in classical Byzantine style, dates from the church's founding in the 12C. The other was produced between the 14C and 15C, with clear Western influences. The two coexist on a column with the dual portrayal of the Dormition of the Mother of God. In the 15C cycle, Renaissance-style use of perspective appears.
