This harmoniously proportioned square, with an equestrian statue of Josef II in the centre, is one of the finest in Vienna. The Austrian National Library, a work by the Fischer von Erlach dynasty of architects (early 18C), occupies the far end of the square. Around the square, several pediments are capped with groups of sculptures.
