Up on a deserted plateau, the necropolis occupies a site parallel to that of the Ancient city. No architectural detail is visible from the outside... It is 5km long, nearly 1km wide and counts some 6 000 tombs (6C-1C BC), 17 of which are open to the public. The vivid, colourful paintings on the walls of the funerary chambers provide a hugely valuable insight into Etruscan civilisation. The necropolis is a Unesco World Heritage Site.
