In Melissani Cave, the intensity and variety of the shades of blue in the water, the resonance and echo phenomena, and the contrast of light and shadow produce a surreal effect. The underground lake, the waters of which are connected to the swallow-holes (Katavóthres) near Argostóli, can be explored by boat.
