Roscrea Castle

 Civil and military monument
  The Michelin Guide's review
This castle was built in the 13C in the form of an irregular polygon, with curtain walls and two D-shaped towers. The original entrance was through a gate tower (1280) now surmounted by 17C gables and chimneys. The portcullis winding gear can be seen from the Great Hall. The gate tower houses Roscrea Heritage Centre, where an exhibition retraces the history of Irish Norman castles.
