The Michelin Guide's review
Founded in 1114, Pontigny Abbey has retained its vast abbey church (117m long, including the porch, and 54m wide) in a remarkable state of preservation. This fine example of Cistercian art features a plain West front, adorned only with a cross carved in the centre of the tympanum. Note that there is no bell tower. The interior, in plain Gothic style, consists of a well-lit nave, with seven bays and ogive vaulting. The transept has six chapels. Note also the elegance of the chancel built at the end of the 12C, the imposing 17C stalls and the 18C altar.
