  The Michelin Guide's review
Džumaja Square illustrates Plovdiv's 2 000-year-old history. The remains of the Roman arena recall the city of Trimontium. Built during the reign of Marcus Aurelius (161-180), this huge coliseum (190m long, 30m wide) is unfortunately mostly located beneath buildings erected later, which means that it can't be completely excavated. The great mosque (Džumaja džamja), built in the 14C and 15C and decorated with a profusion of paintings, recalls the town's Turkish past. Sellers of Byzantine icons perpetuate the tradition of tolerance and the cosmopolitan character of the ancient city of Plovdiv.
