Whether you reach the island of Vassivière (home to the International centre of art and landscape) on foot or by a small train, the bridge commands a stunning view over both shores of the lake. The latter is set in unspoiled wooded hillsides. Covering 1,000ha/2,471 acres, the man-made lake is the result of a dam construction across the River Maulde at Vassivière.
