Japanese engineers demonstrated great ingenuity to design the access road from Nikko to Lake Chuzenji. In order to mitigate the 440m drop in a fault escarpment, 48 hairpin bends were marked out. The recent route channels upbound traffic to the south, while 2km further north, the old track caters for vehicles driving down. On the latter, there are two areas where you can pull over to observe the waterfalls. This road often features as the background for car races in video games, cartoons or manga.
