Civil and military monument
The Michelin Guide's review
The architect William Strickland (1788-1854) considered the Tennessee State Capitol as his masterpiece. This temple, built out of limestone in neo-Greek style sits high on a hill. Its Ionic porticoes and towering cupola take their inspiration from Athenian monuments. Inside, the stairs are made from marble, the ceilings decorated with sumptuous frescoes, and the library has been magnificently restored.
