Historical and archaeological site
  The Michelin Guide's review
The 1,840-step staircase of Mihintale leads up the historical hillside from which Buddhism spread through Ceylon following the conversion of King Anuradhapura by the Indian Mahinda in the 3C BCE. Mahinda founded the first monastery of the island on the exact spot of this meeting, where monks continue to worship still today. Hillsides, ruins and encounters: such is the programme of this edifying site!
