Well worth the diversions
Historical and archaeological site
The Michelin Guide's review
The site of El Brujo, ("the sorcerer"), at its heyday during the Mochica era, is depicted by three pyramids: Huaca Prieta, Huaca Cao Viejo and Huaca Cortada. It has since risen to fame thanks to Señora de Cao, a mummy found in 2006, whose rich jewellery indicates that she was undoubtedly a lady of rank. Another highlight are the very well-preserved red, blue and ochre friezes, in particular that of the "prisoners" and Aiapaec (Mochica God). Finally, don't miss the site's commendable Cao Museo.
