Leaving Sapa, the road crosses the Muong Hoa river then climbs up through the rice fields to the Black Hmong village of Lao Chai. Continuing across fields on the same side of the river, you then come to the Giay village of Ta Van. Head back down towards the Muong Hoa river and cross a small suspension bridge to visit a site of cave drawings. From here, you have the choice of the steep climb back to Sapa or continuing to the Hmong and Dao villages further south.
